How hard is the new 2024 CAPM exam compared to the previous PMBOK 6 version?

The question

I've heard the CAPM changed significantly and now includes a lot of Agile and Predictive methodologies. For those who have taken it recently, is it still mostly just memorizing the 49 processes and ITTOs, or is it more scenario-based like the PMP? I'm worried that my older study materials are now completely useless for the current Seventh Edition curriculum.

The new exam is a different beast entirely. It has moved away from the "pure memorization" of Input, Tools, Techniques, and Outputs (ITTOs) and toward a more holistic understanding of project environments. There are four domains now: Project Management Fundamentals, Predictive Plan-Based Methodologies, Agile Frameworks/Methodologies, and Business Analysis Frameworks. About 15% of the exam is now Business Analysis, which is a huge shift. You absolutely need to study the PMBOK 7th Edition and the Process Groups Practice Guide. If you only memorize the 49 processes, you will likely struggle with the Agile and BA questions which make up a significant portion of the score.

Does this mean the "Brain Dump" strategy for the 49 processes is dead? I was planning on writing out the whole grid the moment the exam started. If it's more scenario-based, how do you even study for the Agile portion without having worked in a Scrum environment?

Michael, the "Brain Dump" is less effective now because the questions ask "What should the PM do next?" rather than "What is an input to X?" To study for the Agile part, focus on the Agile Practice Guide by PMI. Understand the roles (Scrum Master, Product Owner) and the ceremonies (Sprint Planning, Retrospectives). You don't need real-world experience, but you do need to understand the mindset of servant leadership. James, your old PMBOK 6 materials are still useful for the "Predictive" domain, but they are only about 40% of the total picture now.

The Business Analysis part caught me off guard! Make sure you understand how to conduct a needs assessment and manage stakeholders' requirements, as those questions felt very "PMP-lite."

Great tip, Jessica. James, the new exam is arguably "harder" because it's broader, but it's also more interesting and better prepares you for actual project work in a modern office.
