From my perspective as an Agile Coach in the Midwest, we aren't seeing a "decline" in the need for the skillset, but we are seeing a decline in the "pure" standalone title. In 2026, organizations are moving away from having a person who only facilitates ceremonies. They now expect a Scrum Master to have a deeper understanding of the technical stack or product strategy. The Agile and Scrum framework is still the engine, but the driver is expected to do more than just navigate. I’ve noticed that "Agile Delivery Manager" or "Project Lead" is the new preferred terminology. If you have a CSM but no secondary skill like data analysis or basic DevOps knowledge, you will likely find the 2026 market much tougher than it was three years ago.
Kimberly, that’s a sharp observation. If the role is being "absorbed," doesn't that risk diluting the actual agile values? How can an Engineering Manager remain an objective "servant leader" when they also have to worry about performance reviews and technical deadlines?
I actually saw a pay increase this year, but my title changed to "Agile Lead." The specialized knowledge is still very much valued if you can scale it.
