I just finished the Google Data Analytics Certificate and I’m wondering what the next step is for a US-based job seeker. The capstone project was okay, but I feel like everyone has the same one on their LinkedIn. How do I make my projects stand out to American recruiters so I don't just look like every other certificate holder in the applicant pool?

To stand out in the US market, you must move beyond the "Cyclistic" case study provided in the course. Recruiters are tired of seeing the same spreadsheets. Use the skills from the Google Data Analytics Certificate to find a dataset that actually interests you—maybe local real estate trends or sports statistics. Document your entire process on Kaggle or a personal website. Explain why you chose certain cleaning methods in SQL and how your Tableau dashboard solves a specific business problem. Showing original critical thinking is what separates a "certificate collector" from a "data analyst."
Melissa, do you think including a video walkthrough of the dashboard helps, or do recruiters in the US prefer a written summary of the findings?
I started using public datasets from NYC Open Data. It made my portfolio feel much more "real" to local employers than the generic course examples.
That’s a brilliant move, Deborah. Like Steven Martinez was worried about, localizing your data shows you understand the context of the market you're applying to, which is a huge plus for any US-based role.
Jeffrey, a 2-minute Loom video is a game changer! Most hiring managers spend seconds on a resume. If they see a link to a video where you confidently explain a trend you found using skills from the Google Data Analytics Certificate, it proves your communication skills. In America, being able to "tell the story" of data is just as important as the technical ability to query it.
