CAPM vs PMP: Can I skip the CAPM if I have some unofficial project experience?

The question

I've been "managing" projects for 2 years in a marketing agency, but my title isn't Project Manager. I'm wondering if I should bother with the CAPM or just wait another year to hit the 36-month requirement for the PMP. Is there any benefit to having both, or does the PMP completely overshadow the CAPM to the point where the latter becomes a redundant line on my resume?

If you are confident that you can document 36 months of unique, non-overlapping project leadership experience, then waiting for the PMP is often the better financial move. The PMP is the gold standard and carries a significantly higher salary premium. However, many people realize during the application process that their "unofficial" experience doesn't meet PMI's strict definition of leading and directing projects. The CAPM is a great way to "test the waters." It covers the same core material but is much less stressful. If you need a credential now to apply for a promotion at your agency, get the CAPM. If you can wait and your experience is verifiable, go straight for the PMP.

If I get the CAPM now, does PMI offer a discount on the PMP exam later? I'm trying to justify the $300 USD cost if I'm just going to replace it in 18 months anyway. It feels like a high price for a temporary certification.

David, there isn't a direct "discount" on the exam fee, but as a PMI member, you pay less for both exams anyway. The real "discount" is the salary increase you can negotiate between now and when you get your PMP. Even a 5% raise at a Project Coordinator level pays for the CAPM exam in about two months. Robert, if your agency title isn't PM, having the CAPM validates that your "unofficial" work was done to professional standards, which makes your PMP experience description much more credible when you eventually apply.

The PMP definitely overshadows the CAPM. Once you have the PMP, you usually remove the CAPM from your LinkedIn entirely. It's strictly a stepping stone for the early career phase.

Correct, Angela. But for Robert, that stepping stone might be the difference between staying a "Marketing Coordinator" or becoming a "Project Manager" next year. It's about the immediate career momentum.
