I am debating between finishing my degree or just getting the Google Data Analytics Certificate to save money. In America, are companies actually hiring people who only have this certification, or is the degree still a mandatory filter for HR departments? I see mixed reviews online about how much weight these digital badges actually carry during the hiring process.

Heather, for someone already working in a different department like Marketing or Finance, would this Google Data Analytics Certificate be enough to transition internally without going back to school?
A degree gets you the interview, but the skills from the certificate help you pass the technical test. They work best when paired together.
Spot on, Cynthia. As Thomas Richardson asked, the "filter" is real. Using the Google Data Analytics Certificate to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical business data cleaning is a strategy I see working for many successful applicants lately.
In the current US landscape, very few companies will view a certificate as a total replacement for a Bachelor’s degree. Most "no degree required" postings are at tech-forward startups or specific partners in the Google hiring consortium. The Google Data Analytics Certificate acts more like a supplement that proves you have modern, functional skills that a theoretical degree might have missed. If you already have a degree in a different field, this cert is perfect. If you have no degree at all, you will likely need a very impressive GitHub portfolio to bypass the automated resume filters used by larger corporations.
Jason, for internal transitions, it's actually one of the best tools you can use. Managers love seeing initiative. If you can show your current boss that you’ve mastered the Google Data Analytics Certificate, they are much more likely to give you data-driven tasks or move you into an Analyst role because they already trust your work ethic and institutional knowledge. It's much cheaper than a second degree for a lateral move.
