I'm trying to decide between specialized tool training and general foundations. Do you think the Google Data Analytics Certificate worth it in America compared to something like a Tableau Desktop Specialist cert? I want to make sure my resume passes the initial ATS filters for analyst positions in major hubs like Austin or Seattle.

For someone starting out, the Google certificate provides a much broader overview of the entire data lifecycle. While Tableau is a powerful tool, it is only one piece of the puzzle. The Google curriculum teaches you how to ask the right questions, clean data with SQL, and perform analysis before you even get to the visualization stage. In the US, many hiring managers look for "T-shaped" skills—broad knowledge across the board with deep expertise in one area. Start with the Google cert to get that broad base, then specialize in Tableau later if you find yourself drawn to the visual storytelling side of the field.
Are you more interested in the technical database side or the executive reporting side of data? Your choice should reflect your daily tasks.
The Google cert is better for your resume's general appeal, whereas Tableau is better for demonstrating a specific, high-demand skill.
Philip makes a good point. I used the Google cert to get my foot in the door at a mid-sized firm in Ohio, and then they actually paid for my Tableau certification later.
That is the right question to ask. If you prefer the executive reporting side, Tableau is king in the US corporate world. However, if you want a role that involves heavy data cleaning and manipulation, the Google certificate’s focus on SQL and R will serve you better. Most entry-level roles in America require a bit of both, so the Google cert is usually the safer bet for a first credential to get past those pesky ATS filters.
