How are you managing egress cost spikes in multi-cloud setups?

The question

We recently expanded our infrastructure across both AWS and Azure to improve resilience, but our data transfer fees are spiraling out of control. We’re seeing massive egress cost spikes whenever our analytics engine pulls data from the other provider. Does anyone have a proven architectural pattern or a specific networking tool that helps minimize these cross-cloud handshake costs in 2024?

We dealt with this exact issue last quarter. The key for us was implementing a "Data Gravity" strategy where we moved our processing closer to the largest data source rather than moving the data to the compute. We also started using Megaport as a software-defined network (SDN) layer to bypass the public internet for cross-cloud transfers, which dropped our egress rates significantly compared to standard provider pricing. It requires an upfront investment in networking, but for high-volume analytics, the ROI was clear within four months. I'd also recommend checking your compression algorithms; sometimes a simple shift to Zstandard can save you 20% on the volume of bits being sent.

Are you utilizing a central data hub or "Lakehouse" architecture to consolidate the data before processing, or is the traffic happening randomly between microservices?

Mark, we currently have a fragmented setup where services call each other directly. After reading Jennifer's advice, we're looking into a "Global Transit Hub" model. This should centralize the egress points and allow us to apply better monitoring. We also realized we were over-fetching metadata we didn't need. Fixing the API payloads alone is projected to save us nearly $2,000 a month in transfer fees.

We switched to using Cloudflare's R2 storage because they offer zero egress fees. It acts as our "neutral ground" between AWS and GCP, which completely solved the transfer cost headache.

I agree with Patricia. R2 is a game-changer for multi-cloud. We use it as a staging area for our media assets, and the savings on egress have allowed us to reinvest in more compute power elsewhere.
