I’m currently leading a data migration project and I’m caught between the IT team’s technical constraints and the business team’s high-speed demands. How do experienced BAs negotiate these conflicts without compromising the project timeline or the data integrity of the final solution?

Conflict usually stems from a lack of shared understanding regarding the "Minimum Viable Product." I suggest facilitating a MoSCoW prioritization workshop where both parties are present. Use data to show the impact of certain technical constraints on business value. If IT says a feature takes four weeks, show the business the ROI of that feature versus a simpler alternative. Documenting everything in a Traceability Matrix also ensures that everyone stays accountable for the decisions made during these heated sessions. It’s all about being the neutral translator between two different worlds.
Have you tried using low-fidelity wireframes or prototypes to show the business team the technical limitations before the development phase actually starts?
Always lean on the Business Requirement Document (BRD). If it isn't in the signed-off scope, it's a change request. This protects the timeline from scope creep.
Spot on, Susan. Using the BRD as a "single source of truth" is the only way to keep everyone aligned when the project starts getting complex.
James, prototyping is a lifesaver. I find that when business users see a mockup, they realize that some of their "must-haves" are actually quite cluttered or technically redundant. It simplifies the negotiation immediately because they can visualize the end-state and the trade-offs involved.
