I am currently leading a multi-million dollar infrastructure project where two key stakeholders have completely opposing priorities regarding the final scope. This conflict is causing delays in the approval process. How do you navigate these professional disagreements without compromising the project timeline or damaging vital corporate relationships?

In high-stakes environments, I always lean on the Power-Interest Grid. You need to facilitate a dedicated steering committee meeting where the data drives the conversation. Present the impact of each stakeholder’s request on the "Iron Triangle" of cost, time, and quality. Often, when they see that their specific request will push the launch date back by three months, they become more willing to negotiate. Your role is to be the objective mediator. Use a weighted scoring model for requirements to take the emotion out of the decision-making process and align everyone back to the primary project charter and business objectives.
Are you utilizing a formal Change Control Board for these scope adjustments? Having a structured process for evaluating new requests often forces stakeholders to justify their needs against the budget.
Active listening is your best tool here. Sometimes stakeholders just want to feel heard before they are willing to compromise on their original demands for the scope.
Excellent point, Linda. Empathy in management often reveals the underlying "why" behind a stakeholder's stubbornness, which can lead to a creative middle-ground solution.
Currently, the CCB is in place, Robert, but the stakeholders are trying to bypass it by reaching out to the executive sponsors directly. I need to reinforce the governance structure to ensure that all changes are properly vetted for impact before they are even considered for the current phase. It is a constant battle of maintaining authority without appearing like a bottleneck.
