I’ve been applying for jobs online for months but haven't had much luck. I've heard that most people start a career in Cybersecurity through networking and referrals. Where can I find these communities? Are there specific professional groups, Discord servers, or local meetups that are particularly helpful for beginners who want to meet mentors and learn about "hidden" job opportunities in the security industry?

Networking is the "secret sauce" of the security world. I highly recommend attending local BSides conferences; they are community-driven, affordable, and specifically designed for networking. Joining the ISACA or (ISC)2 local chapters can also put you in the same room as hiring managers. On LinkedIn, don't just add people; engage with their content by asking thoughtful questions. Many jobs are filled before they are ever posted on a public board because a manager asks their team if they know anyone. Being active in Discord communities like "The Cyber Mentor" can also help you find study partners and mentors who can vouch for your skills.
Since many of these events are moving back to being in-person, do you think it's worth traveling to a major city just for a weekend conference to meet people?
Don't forget about Twitter (X). The #InfoSec community there is very active and many researchers post job leads or offer to review resumes for free.
Twitter is great! Just be sure to follow the right people and contribute to discussions. It's a great way to stay on top of the latest zero-day threats too.
Absolutely. One weekend at a conference like DEF CON or a regional BSides can result in more interviews than six months of cold-applying on job boards. The "hallway track" where you just chat with people between sessions is where the real hiring happens.
