I work in a software startup where we use Scrum exclusively. I’m considering the pmp certification, but I’m worried it’s too focused on Waterfall. Does the current exam version cover enough Agile to be worth it for someone in tech, or should I just stick to a specialized Scrum certification?

Actually, the pmp certification has undergone a massive shift. About 50% of the exam now covers Agile and Hybrid approaches. It’s no longer just about Gantt charts; it’s about value delivery, retrospectives, and backlog grooming. For someone in tech, the PMP is arguably more valuable than a basic Scrum cert because it teaches you how to bridge the gap between the development team and the business stakeholders who might still be thinking in terms of budgets and fixed deadlines. It gives you a much broader toolkit for navigating complex corporate structures while staying lean.
Do you think having both a CSM and a PMP is overkill for a Senior PM role?
I’m a Scrum Master and the PMP helped me understand the financial and risk management side of things much better.
Exactly! The pmp certification provides that high-level organizational context that specific Agile certs often miss.
Not at all, Laura. The CSM proves you know the framework, while the pmp certification proves you can lead a professional project at scale. Most high-paying PM roles in the US now list both as preferred.
