I’m really nervous about the formulas. Does the stem from the Earned Value Management (EVM) calculations, or has the focus shifted more toward soft skills and leadership in the new version of the exam? How much math should I really expect?

The heavy focus on math has actually decreased in recent years. While you still need to understand Earned Value Management, you are less likely to do complex manual calculations and more likely to be asked to interpret what the numbers mean. For example, if your CPI is 0.8, are you over budget or under? The difficulty has shifted from "doing the math" to "understanding the impact of the data." Most of the exam now focuses on the People and Process domains, specifically how a project manager handles conflict, motivates a team, and manages stakeholders in a hybrid environment.
Would you say the "Business Environment" domain is now trickier than the formulas because it's so subjective?
Don't ignore the formulas entirely, but focus on SPI and CPI interpretation. You'll likely get more questions on those than on PERT or Three-point estimating.
Good advice, Brenda. I only had two actual calculation questions on my exam, but plenty of "what should the PM do next" based on cost performance.
Absolutely. Business Environment only makes up 8% of the exam, but the questions about organizational culture and compliance can be very subtle. Unlike math, where there is a clear right or wrong answer, these require a deep understanding of how a project fits into the larger corporate strategy. It’s a different kind of difficulty that tests your business acumen rather than your calculator skills.
