I see both Power BI and Tableau mentioned in almost every job description for BI Analysts. Since I have limited time to study, which one has a better job market outlook for 2025? I've heard Power BI is cheaper for companies, but Tableau is better for "storytelling" with data. Does one have a significantly steeper learning curve than the other for a beginner?

From a market perspective, Power BI is growing rapidly because it integrates so well with the Microsoft 365 ecosystem that most corporations already use. It is generally easier for beginners because the interface feels familiar if you know Excel. Tableau, however, remains the gold standard for high-end, custom data visualizations and is preferred in industries where design and deep exploratory analysis are key. If you want a job in a large enterprise, Power BI is a safe bet. If you want to work for a boutique data agency or in research, Tableau might be better.
Are you more comfortable with Excel-style formulas like DAX, or do you prefer a more visual, drag-and-drop approach to building logic?
Power BI has a lower cost of entry and a massive job market, making it the most practical choice for many new analysts today.
I agree. Most small-to-midsize businesses choose Power BI because they already have the licenses through their Microsoft Teams or Office 365 subscriptions.
I’m more of a visual person, so I think the drag-and-drop style suits me much better than complex formulas. Then you might actually find Tableau more intuitive initially. However, keep in mind that almost every BI role eventually requires some level of formula writing. If you go with Tableau, focus on "Level of Detail" expressions early on. If you choose Power BI, mastering DAX will be your biggest hurdle but also your greatest strength in the market.
