What is the difference between a Process Map and a SIPOC diagram in a Six Sigma project?

The question

I'm confused about when to use a SIPOC versus a detailed Process Map during the Define and Measure phases. It feels like they both show the same information. Can a Yellow Belt get away with just doing one, or are both strictly required to pass a certification exam and effectively lead a small-scale process improvement initiative?

In most Yellow Belt exams, you'll definitely be asked to identify which tool provides a high-level overview. That's always the SIPOC.

Barbara is right. For the exam, remember: SIPOC = Scoping/High-level, Process Map = Detailed/Analysis. Knowing that distinction is a guaranteed point on the test.

They serve very different purposes! A SIPOC (Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs, Customers) is a high-level view used in the "Define" phase to establish boundaries—it usually only has 4 to 7 steps. A Process Map is a detailed, "Measure" phase tool that shows exactly how the work flows, including decision points and loops. You need the SIPOC first to make sure everyone agrees on what the project is not covering. If you skip the SIPOC and go straight to a detailed map, you often end up "boiling the ocean" and mapping parts of the business that aren't relevant to your specific problem.

Are you struggling to identify your "Customers" in the SIPOC, or is it the "Inputs" that are giving you the most trouble during your current project?

Richard, it was actually the boundaries of the "Process" column. Patricia, your explanation of "boiling the ocean" is exactly what I was doing! I was trying to map the entire procurement cycle instead of just the approval sub-process. I’ll go back and create a high-level SIPOC tomorrow to ground the team. It sounds like the SIPOC is the "macro" view while the Process Map is the "micro" view. This distinction is going to save me a lot of time in my documentation.
