I am currently working in retail management but I am fascinated by how data drives business decisions. I want to shift into data analytics but I have zero coding experience. Is it possible to land a junior analyst role by just mastering Excel and Tableau, or is SQL and Python absolutely mandatory to even get an interview call in the current competitive job market?

Transitioning is definitely achievable with the right strategy. While Excel and Tableau are great for visualization, I strongly suggest you don't skip SQL. It is the backbone of almost every data role because you need it to pull data from databases before you can even analyze it. Start with basic joins and aggregations. Many companies value domain expertise, so your retail background could actually be a huge asset if you apply for analyst roles in the e-commerce or supply chain sectors. Build a small portfolio showing how you solved a specific business problem using a dataset.
Are you planning to take a structured certification course or are you trying the self-study route through YouTube and free documentation?
You can definitely start with Excel and a BI tool, but learning basic SQL will significantly increase your salary potential and job options.
I agree with Megan. In my experience, even "junior" roles often have a quick SQL screening test during the first round of interviews.
I am leaning toward a structured certification like the ones offered here at iCertGlobal because I need a clear roadmap and professional feedback. That is a smart move because the curriculum usually covers exactly what hiring managers are looking for. Having a certificate from a recognized body helps validate your skills when your previous work history doesn't mention "data" explicitly. Plus, the hands-on projects will be the highlight of your resume.
