Which Cyber Security career paths offer the best long-term stability for entry-level analysts?

The question

I am looking into different career paths within the security domain but the sheer number of options like Pentesting, GRC, and SOC Analysis is overwhelming. For someone just starting out, which path offers the most growth? I want to ensure I don't pick a niche that might be automated soon.

The most resilient career paths in Cyber Security right now are arguably in GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) and Cloud Security. While SOC roles are great for learning the ropes, they are increasingly being augmented by AI and automation tools. GRC requires a human touch for policy interpretation and legal alignment, which provides excellent job security. If you enjoy the technical side, Cloud Security is booming as more enterprises migrate away from on-premise servers. Don't let the variety of roles scare you; start with a broad certification like Security+ to see what you enjoy.

Have you looked into how the integration of AI might shift the responsibilities within these career paths, particularly regarding entry-level threat hunting roles?

Charles, AI is definitely changing things, but it’s actually creating a higher demand for people who can audit those AI systems. Entry-level analysts will need to move away from just watching dashboards and toward understanding the logic behind the alerts. So, if you're looking at career paths, focusing on AI-driven security tools will actually make you more valuable rather than putting your job at risk.

Focus on GRC. It is less about "fighting fires" and more about strategy, which makes it one of the most sustainable career paths for avoiding burnout in this industry.

Sandra is spot on. I moved from a high-stress SOC role to GRC and the work-life balance is incredible, plus the pay scale is often higher at the senior level.
