Are there AI tools for language acquisition?

The question

I am an ESL teacher, and I am finding that some AI tools are incredible for language learners. I can have the AI act as a conversation partner for my students.

However, I am worried about the AI teaching them 'unnatural' or overly formal English. Does anyone have experience with this? Are there specific tools that allow for more conversational, slang-based, or age-appropriate language practice? I need something that helps them grow, not just repeat robotic sentences.

Verified summary

AI language models produce natural, slang-heavy, or age-appropriate English when users provide specific system prompts that define the persona's dialect, register, and social context.

The issue isn't the model's inability to speak naturally; it's the lack of friction in your current implementation. When I was setting up linguistic training modules for our overseas dev teams, I realized that unless you force the AI to use specific register constraints, it defaults to a standard, sanitized business tone because that is how it was RLHF-tuned to be safe.

You should stop asking for a conversation partner and start defining the character constraints explicitly, such as requiring contractions, idiomatic expressions, or a specific regional dialect in your system prompt. If you don't constrain the output distribution, you are going to get the lowest common denominator of language every single time.

You need to stop using generic chatbots and switch to role-play specific prompting if you want to avoid robotic output. Instruct your AI to adopt a persona with a specific socio-economic background, age, and geographical origin to force the linguistic model to pull from slang and colloquial datasets rather than academic corpora.

It is a configuration issue, not a tool issue.

That’s an interesting take, Abigail. I’ve been struggling with robotic responses myself, so I’m hopeful that focusing on specific socioeconomic personas might finally help me get the authentic tone I’ve been searching for.
