Is the salary gap between AWS and Azure professionals closing in the United States?

The question

I’ve been researching the debate of AWS vs Azure for a while, specifically regarding compensation. Historically, AWS architects seemed to earn more, but with Azure's rapid growth in 2025, is that still true? Which path should a mid-career professional take to maximize their earning potential in the US?

The salary gap is definitely narrowing. In the past, the AWS vs Azure comparison favored AWS because it was the more "complex" and widely used platform. Today, however, Azure experts who understand hybrid cloud environments are commanding premium rates. According to recent 2024 industry surveys, a senior Azure Architect in a city like New York can easily match or exceed the salary of an AWS counterpart, especially if they have expertise in migrating legacy .NET applications to the cloud. Most US employers are now looking for "Cloud Agnostic" skills, but if you have to pick one, AWS still has a slightly higher ceiling for niche DevOps roles.

Do you think the rise of multi-cloud strategies in US enterprises makes the AWS vs Azure choice less relevant than it used to be?

Rebecca, it definitely changes things. Many companies now use AWS for their public-facing apps and Azure for their internal identity management. Knowing both is the real "money maker" in the US market right now, though starting with one is necessary to build a foundation.

In the Midwest, I've noticed that the AWS vs Azure demand is almost 50/50, but Azure roles often come with better benefits in traditional manufacturing companies.

That’s a solid observation, Patrick. Traditional industries are heavily invested in Microsoft, so Azure is their natural cloud destination, which offers great stability.
