The question

I am looking to pivot my career and want to know the best roadmap to become a data analyst from scratch. Which technical skills should I prioritize first to ensure I can handle real-world data challenges? I want to make sure I am learning the tools that are actually used in the industry right now to stay relevant.

To build a solid foundation, your roadmap should start with Excel for data manipulation and then move quickly into SQL, as it is the bread and butter of data retrieval. Once you are comfortable with queries, pick up a visualization tool like Tableau or Power BI to communicate your findings. For the programming side, Python is highly recommended due to its extensive libraries like Pandas and Matplotlib. Don't just learn the tools; focus on building a portfolio with real datasets from Kaggle. This practical experience is what recruiters actually look for during the hiring process.

Are you planning to focus more on the statistical side or the business intelligence side of analytics? Also, have you looked into getting a professional certification to validate your skills to potential employers?

I’m leaning more toward business intelligence as I enjoy the storytelling aspect. Do you think a specific certification like the PL-300 for Power BI is worth the investment for a beginner?

The best way to start is by mastering SQL. It is the most requested skill in almost every data analyst job description I have seen in the last three years.

I definitely agree with Pamela. I’ve interviewed at four different firms recently, and every single one had a live SQL coding test as the first technical round.
