Comparing CKAD vs CKA for DevOps Engineers in 2024: Which is better for CI/CD?

The question

I’m currently a DevOps Engineer focusing on automating our CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and ArgoCD. I need to get certified this quarter. Should I focus on CKA or CKAD? My daily work involves writing Helm charts, managing deployments, and configuring Ingress controllers. I rarely touch the actual cluster setup as we use a managed provider. Which exam reflects CI/CD best practices more?

For a DevOps role centered on CI/CD and automation, the CKAD is surprisingly more relevant. The exam covers "Application Deployment" strategies like Rolling Updates and Blue-Green deployments, which are the bread and butter of CI/CD. It also tests your knowledge of Helm and Kustomize (in the latest versions), which are essential for managing different environments in your pipeline. While CKA is great for understanding the infrastructure, CKAD is much more aligned with the "Software Delivery" aspect of DevOps that you deal with daily.

Nicole, does the CKAD actually require you to use Helm during the exam, or is it just theoretical knowledge about package managers?

Scott, it is definitely hands-on! You may be asked to install a chart, roll back a release, or modify values in a values.yaml file. The CKAD is purely performance-based, so you are working in a real terminal environment. This is why it's so highly regarded for DevOps—it proves you can handle the tools, not just pass a multiple-choice test.

I found that CKAD helped me optimize our ArgoCD sync policies because I finally understood how the different rollout strategies worked under the hood.

I had the same experience, Wayne. Understanding the difference between 'Recreate' and 'RollingUpdate' at a deep level made our deployment scripts much more reliable.
