How do I choose between Google Cloud Run and GKE Autopilot for scaling containerized microservices?

The question

I am designing a new backend architecture for a high-traffic e-commerce platform. We need to decide between Cloud Run and GKE Autopilot. Our traffic is quite bursty, and we want to minimize operational overhead. Which service offers better autoscaling efficiency and simpler management for a team that isn't deeply familiar with complex Kubernetes YAML configurations and cluster maintenance?

For a team looking to minimize overhead, Cloud Run is almost always the better starting point. It is fully serverless, meaning you don't even have to think about nodes or cluster upgrades. It scales to zero when there is no traffic, which is a massive cost saver for bursty workloads. GKE Autopilot is great if you need deep Kubernetes ecosystem integration or long-running daemons, but it still carries a bit more "Kubernetes tax" than Cloud Run. If your app is a standard web service, go serverless with Cloud Run to move faster.

Are you planning to use Eventarc to trigger your services, and do you have any specific requirements for GPU acceleration in your containers?

That is a great point, Robert. If Amanda needs GPUs for something like real-time image processing, GKE Autopilot recently added better support for specialized hardware. However, for most standard web APIs, Cloud Run's integration with Eventarc makes it incredibly easy to build an event-driven architecture without the complexity of managing a service mesh within a full Kubernetes cluster.

Cloud Run is simpler for sure, but GKE Autopilot gives you more flexibility with networking and Anthos if you ever go multi-cloud.

I agree with Michael. While Cloud Run is the "easy" button, GKE Autopilot is the way to go if you anticipate needing Service Mesh capabilities later on.
