What are the key differences between Data Lakehouse and traditional Data Warehouse architecture?

The question

I am currently evaluating a shift in our infrastructure. Could someone explain if a Data Lakehouse truly offers the performance of a Warehouse with the flexibility of a Lake? I am specifically concerned about ACID compliance and how schema-on-read impacts our downstream BI tools and overall data integrity in a high-volume environment.

Transitioning to a Data Lakehouse, like Databricks or Snowflake's latest offerings, aims to eliminate data silos by providing a single platform for both warehousing and AI. The primary advantage is implementing ACID transactions directly on low-cost cloud storage. From my experience, while schema-on-read offers immense flexibility for data scientists, it requires a robust governance layer to ensure BI tools don't ingest "garbage." You must weigh the initial engineering overhead against the long-term cost savings of not maintaining two separate, mirrored environments for your structured and unstructured data assets.

This is a great debate, but have you considered how your specific ETL/ELT pipelines will handle the metadata management layer required for a Lakehouse to perform at scale?

Michael, we currently use dbt for our transformations. To answer your question, dbt handles the metadata by interacting with the Lakehouse’s catalog (like Unity Catalog or AWS Glue), ensuring that even though the data sits in S3, the logical layer remains as structured as a SQL table.

A Lakehouse is essentially the best of both worlds. It allows for high-performance SQL queries while keeping the raw data accessible for machine learning models without moving it.

I completely agree, Christopher. The cost-efficiency of storing petabytes in parquet format while maintaining SQL performance is a game-changer for modern enterprise scaling.
