What makes a data science project 'portfolio worthy'?

The question

I have completed several tutorials and small assignments, but I am not sure how to turn them into a strong portfolio. What does a recruiter actually look for when they open a GitHub repository link on a resume? Is it just the accuracy of the model, or do they want to see clean code, good documentation, and a clear problem-solving approach? I want to make sure my projects actually stand out.

Verified summary

A portfolio-worthy data science project demonstrates proficiency in data pipeline construction, clean documentation, and logical problem-solving, prioritizing real-world data handling and architectural decisions over abstract model accuracy.

Portfolio projects gain value only when they demonstrate architectural integrity and professional-grade data handling rather than just model performance. A recruiter evaluates your ability to clean raw, messy datasets into structured, usable formats, which is a far more accurate predictor of your day-to-day utility as a data scientist than a high accuracy score on a curated dataset.

Focus your documentation on the trade-offs you made regarding data ingestion, security, and query efficiency, as these reveal your depth of understanding beyond standard tutorial templates.

Stop worrying about accuracy metrics because no one in the real world cares about your 99 percent training set result on a cleaned Kaggle dataset.

You are missing the point if you do not show me how you handle failure states, how your code survives a production environment, or why you chose a specific tool over a more popular alternative. Most candidates show me a notebook full of spaghetti code and empty markdown cells, which usually results in an immediate discard.
