How to create a study group for CTFL?

The question

I think studying alone is quite lonely and I am losing motivation. Does anyone want to form a study group for the CTFL? We could meet over Zoom once a week and discuss chapters or go through practice questions. How do I find others in the same boat? Is there a discord server or a group where people organize this?

Verified summary

To organize an effective CTFL study group, identify candidates through professional testing forums, verify alignment on syllabus versions, and establish a recurring meeting schedule focused on diagnostic mock test reviews.

Finding a compatible group requires a structured approach to ensure you aren't just socializing instead of learning.

  • Search the official ISTQB partner forums to find localized chapters of test practitioners.
  • Verify that potential study partners are targeting the same exam version to avoid conflicting syllabus content.
  • Schedule a 15-minute diagnostic call to align on your respective learning speeds before committing to a weekly meeting.
  • Use shared repositories to track common misconceptions discovered during your individual study sessions.

Don't bother hunting for a discord; just hit the ISTQB subreddit or the official software testing forums to find candidates with the same exam date as you. Setting up a weekly sync is overhead that will kill your velocity if you aren't strict about sticking to the syllabus and grinding through mock tests.

I hear you, Pat Washington. I’m always worried I’ll waste time socializing instead of studying, so your advice about strictly sticking to the syllabus is probably the safest bet for me.

I remember back when I was prepping for my AWS certifications, I felt exactly that same isolation. I ended up connecting with a few peers on a specialized Slack workspace where we would do deep-dive sessions into architectural diagrams every Tuesday evening.

It helped to have people who were as committed as I was, and we made sure to only invite those who were serious about their progress. You should reach out on LinkedIn or Twitter using the specific exam hashtags, as that is where you will find the most professional and dedicated study partners.

I also struggle with that isolation, Namratha Raval. It’s comforting to know others have used LinkedIn for this, though I’m still a bit nervous about reaching out to strangers for help.

Namratha Raval, your experience is encouraging. I often doubt my own networking skills, but using specific hashtags sounds like a manageable and professional way to find a serious study partner.

If you need a group to stay motivated, you are approaching the CTFL wrong. A study group is usually just a way to share bad habits and procrastinate, so stop looking for a social club and start grinding the practice tests until you can pass them in your sleep.
