I’ve been a traditional Linux System Administrator for a decade, but I’m looking to transition into a Cloud Engineer or DevOps role. I see a lot of backend developers taking CKAD, but would CKA be a better "bridge" for someone with my background? I’m worried that CKAD might be too focused on the application layer, whereas I’m used to managing infrastructure and servers.

Given your background as a Linux SysAdmin, the CKA is definitely the superior choice for your career pivot. It aligns perfectly with your existing skills in troubleshooting and system maintenance but applies them to the container orchestration layer. You’ll find the sections on cluster installation, node maintenance, and security much more intuitive. For a career transition, the CKA is often viewed as the "Gold Standard" by hiring managers because it proves you can maintain the health of the entire environment, not just the apps running on top of it.

I’d say go for CKA first. Once you have that foundation, the CKAD becomes a much easier "add-on" certification since there is about 40-50% overlap between the two exams.

He likely already understands many of the core concepts like persistent storage and SSH, so he just needs to learn how Kubernetes abstracts them.
