Should I prioritize getting an MBA or gaining more field experience for Digital Marketing growth?

The question

I am at a crossroads in my career and trying to decide my next move. Does actual field experience matter more than an MBA when you want to move into a Director of Marketing role? I don't want to spend two years in school if practical results are what truly drive promotions.

Digital Marketing is an industry where results are highly measurable, so your track record of ROI and successful campaigns will always be your strongest asset. In this field, professional experience matter because platforms like Meta, Google, and TikTok change their algorithms monthly. An MBA might give you a better grasp of high-level business strategy and networking opportunities, but it won't teach you how to optimize a conversion funnel in real-time. If your goal is a Director role, focus on leading larger teams and managing bigger budgets rather than going back to the classroom full-time.

If you choose to skip the degree, how do you plan to prove your strategic leadership skills where specific experience matter for roles involving multi-million dollar budget oversight?

Gregory, that is exactly why I’m asking! I think the best way to prove that is through a documented history of growth. If I can show I scaled a brand from six to seven figures in revenue, that should theoretically outweigh a degree. Leadership isn't just about a title; it's about the tangible impact you've had on a company's bottom line. Most modern agencies seem to value those case studies over academic theory.

Experience is definitely the priority. In the digital world, an MBA is often seen as outdated by the time you graduate. Focus on certifications and high-impact projects instead.

Jeffrey is right. I’ve hired dozens of marketers, and I haven't looked at the "Education" section of a resume in years. I only care about the "Key Achievements" and tools they’ve mastered.
