What should be included in an MLOps documentation suite?

The question

I am building a new ML pipeline and I want to ensure it stays maintainable for future team members. Beyond the code, what documentation is absolutely mandatory for an agile MLOps system? I am thinking of things like data lineage logs, model metadata, and architecture diagrams. Does anyone have a template or a list of 'must-haves' that ensures a project is truly scalable and reproducible?

Verified summary

An effective MLOps documentation suite must include comprehensive data lineage, hyperparameter configurations, environment dependency manifests, monitoring thresholds, and clear deployment or rollback procedures to ensure reproducibility and system stability.

To ensure your MLOps system remains robust and scalable, you should prioritize capturing these core elements:

  • Complete feature engineering pipelines and raw source references
  • Hyperparameter configurations used during every training run
  • Data drift thresholds and monitoring alert definitions
  • Environment specifications including dependency manifests
  • Deployment strategy documentation and rollback procedures

You need to document the data lineage, the training configuration, and the model evaluation metrics at a minimum. If you do not have an automated way to pull these into a dashboard, your documentation will be obsolete within two months.

Dhanush Saniel, you're right and now I'm panicking because my current documentation is definitely already outdated. I need to figure out an automated dashboard setup immediately before everything falls apart.

Back in 2018, I spent three weeks reverse-engineering a rogue BI pipeline that was failing every time a upstream data source changed its schema. We had the code, but we had absolutely no record of what the pipeline was actually supposed to calculate or who owned the data quality issues.

That taught me that documentation is useless unless it maps the relationship between the data source and the final business metric. If you cannot explain why a number changed from Monday to Tuesday, you do not have a documentation suite, you have a pile of junk that will eventually burn you during a board meeting.
