Is deep prompt engineering an overrated skill compared to traditional Machine Learning?

The question

Everyone claims to be a "Prompt Engineer" lately. Is this a legitimate career path or just a temporary trend? I worry about a <skill gap> where people rely on prompts but can't explain the underlying Machine Learning principles. Is prompt engineering overrated?
