I have a strong background in data science, but I want to pivot specifically into AI analytics consulting. Beyond knowing Python and SQL, what soft skills or business acumen do I need? Are clients looking for someone who can code the model or someone who can interpret the 'why' behind the results?
Consulting in AI analytics requires shifting focus from model architecture to quantifying business value, managing stakeholder expectations, and implementing robust governance to ensure project feasibility and ROI.

Clients are looking for someone who can translate business outcomes into data requirements rather than someone who just writes code.
- Stakeholder management to clarify actual goals
- Financial literacy to calculate ROI
- Governance frameworks for AI security
- Presentation skills for non-technical audiences
Clients rarely care about the technical elegance of your code; they care if you can translate those messy probability outputs into a balance sheet impact. In my time managing production systems, I have seen brilliant models die on the vine because the analyst couldn't explain to a CFO why a 5 percent increase in churn prediction was worth the cost of the infrastructure required to scale it.
You need to bridge the gap between technical reality and boardroom appetite. If you cannot describe the business risk of a model drift event, you are not a consultant, you are just a developer waiting to be automated.

Johnni Burns, this list is overwhelming. I worry I lack the presentation skills needed here. Do you think focusing on governance frameworks first is safer before I tackle the financial ROI calculations?
