Solved: How to fix a hanging Cisco UCS architecture deployment?

The question

I am currently struggling with a deployment where the fabric interconnects are not talking to the blade chassis correctly. It seems like a discovery issue, but I am stuck in a loop. Has anyone run into a situation where the UCS architecture discovery fails at the 'physical link' stage? I have verified cables and SFP compatibility, but the link lights remain dark. Looking for any advice on common pitfalls.

Verified summary

Incompatible firmware versions between the Fabric Interconnect and the IOM are the primary cause of UCS discovery failures at the physical link layer.

Check your IO module firmware version mismatch immediately as that is the most common cause for physical link failure in new UCS deployments. If the FI and the IOM are not running compatible software versions, the hardware will stay in an uninitialized state despite the cables being perfectly fine.
