Clarification on PDU earning requirements: What counts towards the 60 Professional Development Units for PMP renewal?

The question

I just earned my PMP certification, and I'm already looking ahead at the renewal process. I know I need 60 PDUs over three years, but I'm confused about the breakdown. What activities really count towards the PMI Talent Triangle categories (Ways of Working, Power Skills, Business Acumen)? Are attending webinars, reading articles, and doing my day-to-day project work enough, or do I need formal courses to meet the Continuing Certification Requirements?

The PMI Talent Triangle mandates a minimum of 8 PDUs in each of the three areas: Ways of Working (like Agile or new project methods), Power Skills (Leadership/Communication/Collaboration), and Business Acumen (Strategy/Business Knowledge). You need a total of 35 PDUs from Education (formal learning activities). The remaining 25 can come from "Giving Back" activities, but you can use Education for all 60. Reading relevant books/articles or on-the-job project work does count under certain Giving Back or Education limits, but formal activities like accredited webinars, training courses, or local PMI chapter meetings are the easiest and most verifiable way to meet the 35-hour Education requirement and ensure you hit the 8-PDU minimum for each segment of the PMI Talent Triangle. Always report PDUs through the online Continuing Certification Requirements System (CCRS).

Is it true that simply documenting my hours spent mentoring a junior PM on Risk Management or leading an internal continuous improvement initiative counts toward the Giving Back PDUs, or is there a cap on how many project work hours I can claim?

Ethan, yes, mentoring, coaching, and creating content do count under the Giving Back category! However, there is an absolute limit: you can only claim a maximum of 25 PDUs from Giving Back activities, and your day-to-day project work can only count for a maximum of 8 PDUs of that 25. The bulk of your 60 PDUs (at least 35) must come from Education to demonstrate ongoing professional growth and meet the Continuing Certification Requirements.

Focus on Education PDUs first; make sure you hit the 8 PDU minimum in each of the three PMI Talent Triangle areas. Webinars on Agile techniques or Business Acumen are quick and easy ways to get verifiable credit.

I find that the free webinars offered by PMI Authorized Training Partners are the best way to get easy, pre-approved PDUs. They also often cover trending topics like Scrum or Digital Marketing integration into projects, which is great for the Ways of Working segment.
